One thing I’d say about the new new age psychedelic renaissance that is that it’s always come from a rather traditional—and I think boring, derivative and anti-sensual perspective. When you look at the voices with the most clout in the scene they are all old white dweebs. In the underground there are plenty of (white wealthy) people spreading anti-vax rhetoric at the same time as they espouse the healing properties of psychedelics, essential oils and past life regressions.
Delusion amplifies delusion. If a person has a deep biased neurotic addiction and craving for, say, power or victimhood etc… hallucinogens will amplify that so that you can directly face it. But most ppl see it as a kind of confirmation and validation bias, because they have no training in nondual, altered states of dreaming perception.
Lol fuck yeah. Theres a reason that one “arm” of Tibetan buddhism is dedicated to the wrathful “deities”. Its all path, everything can be path. But you have to want to be fully present and related with exactly that which arises, but not as a solution or an “advantage”.
Just a few days ago I was talking with my partner about these very shifts (the 3Cs) -- not just within the psychedelic context, but across "big wellness". The biohacking bros are going right. And they’re praying. And they are talking about being shamed - or how they shouldn’t be shamed - for praying. (see a recent Huberman interview) Don’t get me wrong. I like prayer. I do it daily, in my own animist way.
But the subtext concerns me.
That Christianity is under attack in this country has long been a cry of conservative movements (it's Merry Christmas! for Christ's sake...). When the bros talk about prayer, they don't explicitly name Christian leanings...but their discussions are heavily flavored with a persecuted-holy man vibe.
These men are already rich, buff, and massively influential. What's with the persecuted tone?
My guess is it's the new clout that comes from being anti-left. For decades, it was the left against the machine, big pharma, big religion. The right were old curmudgeons for the status quo. Now the old left and old right have given birth to a ideological child entering into its awkward teenage years. Trying to figure out if its cool or not, rebelling against all the wrong things, and latching onto wellness trends and psychedelics like golden ticket to popularity. Poor kid has been programmed by capitalism and hasn't learned how to actually think for itself yet.
Anyway, all this is to say I feel validated in my observations and look forward to part 2 :)
You did not address the explosion of genetic chemical altering to create thousands of variations of designer psychoactive drugs.
Speaking of German Intellectuals, this problem was anticipated and addressed in the invaluable 2009 book by German philosopher Thomas Metzinger — “The Ego Tunnel: The Science of the Mind and the Myth of the Self.” Metzinger discusses the need for a new kind of ethics, a Consciousness ethics. From the relevant section: (p229–230) “Modern neuroethics will have to create a new approach to drug policy. The key question is, Which brain states should be legal? … which should be declared off limits? It’s important to remember that for thousands of years people of all cultures have used psychoactive substances to induce special states of consciousness: not merely religious ecstasy, relaxed cheerfulness, or heightened awareness but also simple, stupid intoxication. The new factor is that the tools are getting better. Therefore, we must decide which altered states can be integrated into our culture and which are to be avoided at all cost.”
Metzinger has done further work in this area and you may want to check it out.

Yes. Psychedelics do not ‘open’. They make you confirm what’s there.
I like to say a revealer of karma which is a wisdom gift, but only if we can accept such a painful gift!

I caught the second half from the Ripples Collective too. Saw you in the back. That poem was indeed DOPE. Their work is so inspiring.
Thanks again for holding a strong prayer. Your talk was stellar... put the firm in firmament.
May we all heed the Amazonian Ayahuasquera who spoke at the end during the plenary when she said, "Our science is our ethics."
